Internship Opportunities

Summer Internship Program

Overview:

ITI runs an 8-10-week Summer Internship Program (typically June through early August). Each year’s specific call for applications is published around early March, with application deadlines included in that announcement.

What Interns Do:

Students work on real cybersecurity-related research and related projects, which may include:

  • Research and data analytics
  • Application development and programming
  • Systems and network operations support
  • Technical writing, reporting, and presentations
  • Web development or technical support tasks

Interns gain practical experience and often present their work at the end of the program.

Eligibility,  Qualifications, and Expectations:
  • Interns must be currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate students at UIUC
  • Students from any major are welcome to apply; however, some roles may require specific technical skills (e.g., programming or data analysis)
  • Interest in cybersecurity or related fields is strongly encouraged
  • Prior experience relevant to the role can strengthen an application but is not required for all positions
  • A minimum GPA (e.g., 3.0) is preferred; however, GPA is only one factor considered during selection
  • Interns are expected to contribute to ongoing ITI projects and collaborate professionally with researchers, staff, and fellow students
How to Apply:

The ITI internship application form is open year-round. Students may submit an application at any time to be considered for both summer and academic-year opportunities.

Applicants should be prepared to submit:

  1. A current resume
  2. A brief statement of interest (cover letter format) outlining relevant skills and interests

There is no need to reapply multiple times; applications remain on file and are reviewed during the appropriate selection periods.

If interested, please submit your application, cover letter, and resume here.

Summer Internship Timeline:
  • Applications are reviewed annually in early spring
  • Interviews are typically conducted during the second week of March
  • Summer internship offers are generally made by the end of March

Students selected for the summer program will be contacted directly regarding next steps.

Academic Year Opportunities:

Applications submitted outside the summer review window may also be considered for academic-year internships, which are filled on a rolling basis as needs arise.

Helpful Tip for Prospective Applicants:
