Twenty-one undergraduate students from around the world were selected to receive 2010 summer internships from the Information Trust Institute (ITI) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

This year is the fourth offering of the annual summer undergraduate research internship program, which has attracted increasing interest with each year of the program. This year's interns were selected from 473 applicants; the program received 351 applications in 2009, 94 in 2008, and 40 in 2007, its inaugural year. The student interns are participating in 8- to 10-week research projects, supervised by ITI researchers in a variety of information trust research areas. Interns receive stipends, housing, and, in some cases, an allocation for travel expenses. The internships are supported by multiple funding sources, particularly a "Research Experiences for Undergraduates" site award from the National Science Foundation.

This year, faculty mentors participating in the program are from the Illinois departments of Computer Science, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, History, and Mechanical Science & Engineering, as well as the National Center for Supercomputing Applications and the Coordinated Science Laboratory. The program is led by ECE Professor Michael C. Loui and ITI's Assistant Director for Social Trust Initiatives, Dr. Masooda Bashir.

In addition to working individually with faculty on real-world research projects, interns will attend weekly seminars at which professors present talks on research work ongoing at Illinois and weekly sessions on ethics in the responsible conduct of research and in the development of information technology. Some interns are working with graduate student mentors who are participating in activities to develop their mentoring skills. The summer program will culminate in a poster session at which all of the interns will present the results of their work, and all of the students will write technical papers presenting their research accomplishments.
