Philip Krein holds the Grainger Endowed Emeritus Chair in Electric Machinery and Electromechanics and is director of the Grainger Center for Electric Machinery and Electromechanics. Krein received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1982. His research interests include energy-efficient buildings, alternative and renewable energy systems, electric transportation, electric machinery, electromechanics and power electronics. A Fellow of IEEE, Krein won the IEEE William E. Newell Award in Power Electronics in 2003, has served as president of the IEEE Power Electronics Society and is currently Chair of the IEEE Transportation Electrification Community. In 2016 he was elected to the U.S. National Academy of Engineering.  Krein has also been awarded 34 U.S. patents
